When we get to heaven and have to give an account of how we managed God’s resources (1 Corinthians 4:2), I hope God will reply to all of us, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” But it’s up to all of us to make sure every believer understands God’s role as owner and our role as stewards. I’m here to tell you that I want to reclaim the word stewardship in the church today. ![]() We become grateful for everything we have. We approach our work with a new sense of purpose. We treat our spouses and kids differently. STEWARDSHIP In biblical usage the management of whatever a person is entrusted with, not only to preserve but profitably administer for his master. We begin to build a legacy of stewardship in our families. When we understand true, biblical stewardship, the trajectories of our lives change with every decision we make. It changes our perspective on our family budgets, our daily decisions, even our purpose in life. How awesome is that? It’s both an honor and a serious responsibility! When we get that in our spirit, well, it changes things. It’s all God’s, and He trusts us with it.ĭid you catch that? We get to manage all of the Creator’s stuff. That means our time, talents, treasure, relationships, jobs and, yes, stuff. I often think of it as the good steward parable. One of my favorite passages is the parable of the talents in Matthew 25:14-30. Thankfully, it also covers how to be a good steward. The Bible is an amazing, ancient guide, that is just as applicable today as it was 2000 years ago. Again according to Merriam-Webster, a steward is 1 - One employed in a large household or estate to manage domestic concerns (such as the supervision of servants, collection of rents, and keeping of accounts) The old age of the words steward and stewardship is implicit in this definition. ![]() God commands us to be stewards over everything He blesses us with. As usual, God does not leave us without a road map and examples. The character of the steward consists of being humble, wise, loving, cheerful, content, grateful and disciplined. One who gives cheerfully, saves consistently, invests wisely, and avoids debt. Instead, we’re His stewards-His managers. One who intentionally multiplies resources and uses them for Gods glory. The Christian steward is not only responsible for the financial blessings provided by God but also the spiritual gifts that are given through the Holy Spirit.
